The world is awash with a variety of energy sources. Fossil-based fuels such as natural gas, oil and coal accounted for more than 81 percent of all energy consumed in 2018. Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is 5 percent. Different countries employ different energy sources to balance environmental and economic requirements.
Nature provides energy in many forms like sun, wind waves and ocean. When harnessed and converted into more convenient forms of energy, like electricity or heat, these are referred to as primary sources. These sources are non-renewable resources of energy when they are exhausted.
The environment is harmed by many fossil fuels and also other energy sources that aren’t renewable. For instance mining for oil can take away the planet’s forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming.
Fortunately, many of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Solar, wind, and hydropower can produce, for instance, electricity without the need to dig for new sources.
Other renewable energy sources are emerging, like waves and tidal power. However, to be used at a large scale these technologies require effective distribution networks. These need to be built, which requires the use of non-renewable energy. This means that these sources are not yet sufficient to meet the majority of our energy needs. However, it’s important to be aware that prices for renewable energy equipment have come down significantly over the last couple of years, and efficiency is growing quickly.
