Story
The story of how a young Donald Trump started his real estate business in the 1970s and 1980s in New York with the help of infamous attorney Roy M. Cohn. Roger Stone, longtime Donald Trump and Roy M. Cohn acknowledged that Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Cohn was “unusual in its accuracy.” [From Trailer] Roy Cohn: Rule Three: No matter what happens, you declare victory and never admit defeat.

As “Student”; (2024 edition; 120 ,in) opens, it’s the early 70s, and a young Donald Trump is spotted in a restaurant of faces after layers and fixer Roy Cohn. For reasons that are unclear and never really explained, Cohn decides to take Trump under his wing, and Trump becomes his “apprentice.” There are currently less than 10 minutes left in the movie. A couple of comments: This is the latest announcement from Iranian director Ali Abbasi.

It presents on the big screen a period of Trump’s life spanning approximately 15 years (1972-1987). If you’ve been following the politics of this country for the past 9 years, starting with Trump descending the escalator at Trump Tower and announcing his candidacy for the presidency, nothing in the movie comes as much of a surprise because it just (re)affirms what. we know about Trump. The magic is brought in as if you were a fly on the wall.

Not enough can be said about Sebastien Stan’s amazing performance, whose authenticity will amaze you. The rest of the cast is also great, including Jeremy Strong (as Cohn) and up-and-coming Bulgarian actress Maria Bulkova (as Ivana). I won’t be surprised to mention that the movie is being reviled by Trump and MAGA extremists (without even having seen the movie, of course), and Trump’s lawyers have tried everything they could to stop the movie from being released in the US, but to no avail. "Student" premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and received immediate acclaim.
The movie hit theaters in the US this weekend and I couldn’t wait to see it
The film currently has a 77% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that seems about right to me. Saturday’s showing party where I saw it at an arthouse theater here in Cincinnati was well attended with about 25-30 people in attendance. If you want to know what Trump was like 40-50 years ago, I would definitely suggest checking it out and drawing your own conclusions.
