I love authentic historical dramas
During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, an American sports broadcast team must adapt to live coverage of Israeli athletes being held hostage by a terrorist group. Especially in the eras I lived in. This one seems to be true. It’s a story I’m familiar with and have seen told in various formats in various films over the years.
I saw Spielberg’s Munich
As the title suggests, I found this one to be the most interesting of all. I still remember the theater years ago and it was a bit long and bloated. Boring, though I hate to say it was. And metaphorical to a fault.
Cigarettes are being smoked
This true version is tighter, the running time of this film is shorter, and the clock is ticking, and lives are at stake. Also, airtime. You were in the control room of ABC’s Wide World of Sports when the tragic terrorist attacks occurred during the 1972 Olympics in Germany. Rotary dial telephones are used for communication.
But it’s rated R, so no
A major crisis is unfolding in the Olympic Village. It’s a good history lesson for Gen-Z. I think it would be appropriate for classrooms, middle school, and even high school history. But history is not pretty at all.
This is worth a trip to the movies
John Magaro and Ben Chaplin shine brightly with their excellent performances. It’s not a terrible idea to bring your high school-aged child to the theater with you for this. They can stand up to learn a little history. They can then go out with you and ask, “Did that really happen?”
